White Clouds No. 1
I've been reading Lama Govinda's book The Way of the White Clouds, recounting his spiritual and physical journeys in Tibet in the 1930s and 40s, before the Chinese invasion. One of the recurring themes is how our small, seemingly insignificant choices and actions can have far-reaching influence on our lives and the lives of others. This facet of Karma has a small, insignificant echo in my making process: minute shifts in the tension while knitting can create vastly different pattern outcomes from the same dyed yarn. This run of hats illustrates that quirky process, with each one exhibiting the resulting cloudscape of its yarn karma.
The soft blue gradient was dyed at the very end of the life of my indigo fermentation vat this summer. When a vat is nearing death, it is tricky to work with, it goes off balance easily, like we might recognize in a wobbly elder person. And the color it offers is more precious.. soft and almost translucent.
No. 1: A paced and methodical spiral of misty valleys and wispy clouds. See below for a 360ยบ video of the hat.
